Young Love

Sam Hartman

Two people, both alike in dignity,

At the lunch table, where we lay our scene,

From ancient crush spawns new love suddenly,

Where civil flirts makes civil ears unclean.

From forth the painful school of these two, arose

A pair of star-crossed lovers that stake their lives.

Whose misadventured piteous overthrows

Doth with their love bury their comrades’ strife.

Each sit ignorant of their young-mark’d love,

And the continuance of their close friends’ rage,

Which, but by flirtings end, nought could remove,

 Is now the two hours’ traffic of our stage;

The which if you with patient ears attend,

What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend.

Just look at her. She’s just sitting there not really talking to anyone. I wonder what she is thinking about… She could be thinking about me! oh no. my hair looks weird, and she looks absolutely flawless. I’m going to have to go to the bathroom to fix it real quick! Just look at him. he’s just sitting there not really talking to anyone. I wonder what he is thinking about… she could be thinking about me! oh no. my hair looks weird, and he looks absolutely flawless. I’m going to have to go to the bathroom to fix it real quick!

“oh hi!”             “oh hi!”

They both stood in silent discomfort

Neither eye contact nor words exchanged

Both thinking of a clever retort

Little did they know neither was estranged

Say something don’t just stand there like an idiot. Come on me think of something clever, something funny, just anything! Ok here we go, I got this!.. Crap never mind I can’t so much as look at her in the eye. Maybe if I’m lucky she will say something… or maybe she silent because of me?! She probably wants nothing to do with me but she is too nice to just leave.

Oh come on brain this is terrible. Say something! This is stupid I’m going to go for it!.. Eh never mind. I can’t bare to look at him in the eye. Maybe if I’m lucky he will think of something first. Or maybe he is silent because of me! He probably wants nothing to do with me but is just too nice to straight up leave.

Ok now I feel bad Ok now I feel bad

“so uh…”     “You uh…”

“I’m sorry”          “You go first”

The two lovebirds chuckled

Thier muscles relaxed

Their knees, unbuckled

This isn’t so bad. Here I’ll just say something; a joke

“so… you come here often?”

“the bathroom?”

She laughed! She really genuinely did. My life is over. I don’t need to live anymore after this. Ok, something else, think of something else.

“yeah. Everything ok with the old digestive system?”

…What… The… Hell am I thinking? What even was that?! A joke?! Thats not what jokes are! You blew it brain.

“Yeah… sure”

Damn it! Why can’t I think of something clever?! He is hilarious and I give anything, but two word responses. “yeah sure”? what sort of response is that? I-I can’t do this. I have to break eye contact for a minute. I don’t want to see the embarrassment

…Oh no. “yeah sure”?… I-I don’t want to live any more after this. I have to break eye contact for a second, this is too embarrassing.

Did… did he just look at my chest?

Did… did I just look at her chest?!

Did… did I just look at his crotch?!

Did… did she just look at my crotch?

Oh no! I didn’t mean to! I was just looking down from her face!

“I WASN’T STARING AT YOUR BOO-”

“oh”

Oh no! I didn’t mean to! I was just looking down from his face!

“I WASN’T STARING AT YOUR DI-”

“oh”

“I-It’s totally fine”

““I don’t mind. It’s flattering, but I wasn’t-”

“I know, me neither. Don’t worry about it”

“So uh… What’s up?”

“Ha Ha! good question. We should’ve probably started with that”

“Yeah. You know what they say about Hindsight”

“Yeah… Thats it’s a good name for a ketchup themed glasses store”

A blooming peace this morning with it brings;

The sun, tomorrow, will bright, show his head:

Go hence, to have more talk of these glad things;

None need be pardon’d, and none punished:

For never was a story of more… oh

Than of this Juliet and her Romeo.
