At midnight on July 24, 2020, the American pop superstar Taylor Swift released her eighth studio album, Folklore. Folklore hit number 1 on Billboard, as did six of her other albums. Swift’s record also hit over two million sales after being released for one week and placed as one of the top selling albums in 2020. Many of her fans say this is her best album yet. As someone who has listened to her albums repeatedly, I think this is undebatable.
This record deserves a great deal of recognition. Each song is crafted with great meaning. Also, this record has an admirable balance of emotional, upbeat, and empowering songs. Most of Swift’s music reads like poetry. Some of the songs on her most recent album can be difficult for her younger fans to comprehend. Even though this album is unlike her past records and could be hard to understand, it can still be appreciated and enjoyed by all ages.
The entire Folklore album can be found on most major streaming platforms, such as Youtube, Spotify, and Apple Music. You can also purchase the Folklore CD on Taylor Swift’s website and at retailers like Target, Amazon, and Walmart.
On the release date, Swift also dropped a music video for the album’s second song, “Cardigan”. In just over a week, the video has garnered more than 45 million views and 1.6 million likes. This song is believed to tell a story of teenage love from one perspective. Swift’s songs, “August” and “Betty”, tell the other two perspectives of this love story.
Every song on the album is exceptional, but one song that stands out is “The Last Great American Dynasty”. This song is about a mansion, also known as The Holiday House, in Rhode Island, that is owned by Swift. The lyrics reveal the background of the house and the drama that surrounded it. “The Last Great American Dynasty” is fun to listen and sing along to. Like all of her other songs it is written remarkably well. What makes this song so intriguing is that it allows you to look into the history of the house and more of Swift’s life.
When compared to Swift’s previous records, Folklore has entirely different content. As the name suggests, this album incorporates folk inspired music and currently it is unknown if it is considered pop. Folklore is categorized as Alternative/Indie.
Folklore includes much slower and calmer songs especially in comparison to Lover, her last album. Despite the difference in Swift’s new album from her previous ones, Folklore is definitely worth a listen. Her release of more mature music with deeper meanings is paying off.
Swift’s records are some of the best music in modern times, and what causes her music to be so exceptional is that she is always striving to improve. Taylor Swift said, “I am intimidated by the fear of being average.”
