Video Games All gamers have heard the phrase in their lives, “Get off those video games and go make some friends.” What most people won’t be able to tell you is that in fact on video games, there is an entire network of millions of friends around the world. Everyday, people log on to the internet to check their friends list and see that their friend in Britain or Australia is online. People in faraway countries, who you have no real life ties to whatsoever. Why bother talking to them? Real life relationships are stressful, dramatic, and often hard to establish. When you meet a person over the internet, you immediately know you have something in common; you both like to play video games. You strike up a conversation about the game, and then all of a sudden, a friendship is established. A friendship that can be maintained over years, never having to deal with real life drama. They are an escape. You won’t lose a friend over Xbox live because they stole your girlfriend. You won’t have to listen to them complain about how you aren’t spending enough time with them, because they have other friends they can play with too. If for whatever reason, you try to establish a conversation with someone and all you get is hate, all you have to do is leave the game, and get into a new one. You’ll never meet that person again in your lifetime, and you aren’t left feeling worthless. In the real world, if you try to make a friend and end up getting in a fight, the reputation will haunt you for years to come. On video games, you drop it and move on, attempting to establish a friendship with one of the other 11 million people online.

Relationships Video games. Comfort food for the loneliest of souls. An ingenious method of escape from the troubles in a life devoid of other pleasures. Video games have an advantageous quality for many, as, in these destitute times, they allow the gamer to forget. Repeated mechanical motions turn one’s brain to mush. The player revels in motorized physical activity without actually needing to do any strenuous exercise. With the amount of stress the average person is made to withstand, any recreation that requires no self-reflection is indeed a desirable activity. However, the real question is, when one’s sole delight is attempting to become a mindless machine, can one truly be happy? No, is the answer our minds are programmed to cry in incredulity. This response is automatic because it is true. Everyone, from the youngest of children yet incapable of fluent speech to the wisest of elders, knows and embraces the fact that love is always the answer. This is the core belief of our society, as well as every other society, group and culture. Mankind is always stronger united than alone. When people collaborate, interact with each other and form unbreakable emotional bonds, great things are bound to happen. People who are incapable of working with others productively are pitied. From birth children are taught to get along with each other, to make friends, and to maintain good relationships with everyone they know and love. As people grow and mature, they begin to form new kinds of relationships. It is considered a terrible tragedy when two people break up or get a divorce. Often one’s worst fear is that someone they love will die or get hurt. It is in the nature of mankind to make relationships and to cultivate these relationships. In isolation one can never truly find joy. |
