Martial Arts Movies

There is no question that musicals played an important part of American entertainment history. If I lived during the Great Depression, you bet I would want my escapism paved by yellow bricks. If I had just survived World War II, you bet I too would enjoy curling up with a few of my favorite things. But, times have changed.  So, if you will join me in a moment of silence for musicals….Thank you. Let’s move on.

Hey Brown Baron, isn’t entertainment always about escapism? Yes, it certainly is. But, escapism comes in more than one shape and size to fit a given generation’s needs. In the past, in certain uncertain times, we needed the innocence of Garland and the mothering of Andrews. We needed to escape to a world of soul mate- to a place where good things happening to good people. In contrast,  how many of us, today, have honestly felt the tug of a Zach Efron archetype or  the need for an  Ashley Tisdale-type heroine? They may be cute. But they are far from culturally or psychologically important.

No, today, we need an escapism of a whole different nature. We need to escape to a world of justice- a place were bad things will come to those who act badly.  We want and need Steven Segal, Chuck Norris, Bruce Lee and Jean-Claude Van Damme. Today’s man behind the curtain is buying off corrupt politicians and policemen with profits from crack sales to inner city children. Therefore, we need heroes packing more than a yapping mutt or an acoustic guitar. We need heroes packing a round house kick, an axe kick, a butterfly kick, a side kick, and, for good measure, a reverse side kick.
