Horror films The Thrill of Horror or Possible Laughter of a Romantic Comedy Going to the movies is always fun but only when the movie is enjoyable. The word enjoyable usually isn’t related to horror movies but horror movies could be more enjoyable than most romantic comedies. Sure almost all horror films are done horribly wrong but that’s part of the fun. In most horror movies there is an annoying blonde who won’t STAB THE DUDE WHEN SHE HAS A GIGANTIC KNIFE but these types of horror movies are actually more fun and hilarious than a movie that is trying to be comedic. Anyone who has seen an Adam Sandler “romantic comedy” will admit that the only enjoyable part of the movie is the end credits. The small parts that are supposed to make the audience laugh come out awkward and annoying. When the director, writers and actors know what they are doing, they can create a masterpiece. Aliens starts with absolutely nothing happening for the first five minutes but it is some of the most suspenseful five minutes of any movie. A correct horror movie is created in a believable atmosphere. A good horror movie will build on that atmosphere until the climatic ending, keeping the viewer at the edge of their seat, jumping when something attacks. That is what separates horror from romantic comedies. Horror movies grab the viewer’s attention and keep it glued to the screen. Another plus of watching horror movies over romantic comedies is that the audience will not have to worry about an unbearable jerk who is just realizing his ability to love. Instead they focus on who will be killed next or where the killer is now or relief when that annoying woman, who’s only known ability is to scream, is finally taken down. |

Romantic Comedies Spend Your Movie Money Wisely It’s fair to say that romantic comedies are not the most realistic of movies. For every sweet little teenage boy next door there are three more bar-hopping jerks. What’s a girl (or guy) to do? However, Tattler may have found the one genre more unrealistic than romantic comedies. Horror movies. Senseless violence. No real plot, just chainsaws and psycho killers. We watch people be killed and tortured for our own entertainment. (Of course they’re not real, but it doesn’t feel that way when you’re in the theater.) The whole idea is a modern version of Rome’s gladiator fights. And although I bash them, I do love romantic comedies. They’re cute and funny. While horror movies make me sleep with my light on, romantic comedies make me laugh (and occasionally cry). You can be sure that everyone will end up happy. But in a horror movie, all you know is that most everyone will die. Movies are always a bit of an escape, a way to leave your life and move into a better world, if only for a few hours. And the best movies leave you with a bit of hope. In “Avatar” we hope that the small can prevail against all odds. In “Julie and Julia” we hope that anyone can follow their passion, whether cooking or writing. What hope do horror movies give us? The place I want to escape to isn’t filled with chainsaws or ghosts. It’s a world where everyone can have what they truly want, and live happily ever after. In the world of a romantic comedy, even if life isn’t perfect, it is fun. |
