For over a month now, my friends and I stumbled upon a trailer that intrigued us to such a degree, on blisteringly cold Saturday night we made the trek to E Street Cinema to see the midnight premier; and I would do it twenty times over if I had to. Black Dynamite, it was called, and it was straight up the funniest movie I can remember seeing. Ever. A blaxsplotation film following in the footsteps of 70′s movies such as Shaft, Black Dynamite follows the protagonist of the same name, who is “super cool and knows kung-fu”. When drug dealers (fronting for the scheming “Man”) murder his brother, pump heroin into the community, and distribute adulterated malt liquor to the ghetto, Black Dynamite utilizes all of the skills at his disposal to deliver justice, kung-fu style (between visits to the ladies, of course; he is out of sight!).
The film first premiered at the 2009 Sundance Festival, and has just made its way to the big screen. DC native and Director Scott Sanders has personally attended each of the showings in the District, which are currently only to be seen at a midnight showing at the Landmark E Street Theater; my friends and I had the pleasure of meeting him and enjoyed quite an extra laugh as he delivered his “rejected” narration for the trailer. The film itself is riotously funny, putting the Hangover to shame, and briskly surpassing Borat for intensity of humor. Each and every scene delivered a rib-splitting stomache laugh throughout the entire course of the 1:30 hour movie. I give the movie a 4.9/5 due to two complaints I have with the movie. First, the movie had so many epic lines, its hard to remember half of them which isn’t a bad thing but whatever! Regardless, each of the many times I thought back to the movie today in class, it brought about a chuckle and attracted many weird looks. Second, towards the end, the plot kind of falls apart in the “makes sense” department. The fact that the laughs keep on rolling in make this easy to ignore however, and I will only subtract .1 from my score of the movie. More “selective” movie critics will obviously weigh this shortcoming with more value, but on Rotten Tomato the film still currently recieves an 82%

I just want to say I agree 100%, THIS IS HILARIOUS! I just saw it on DVD and it is good, but it didn’t bring laughs after every scene. Its not great but it is pretty decent. However, the part where Black Dynamite threw the chinese guys hat at warrior island and it hit him 20 minutes later in the room was the best part ever! And yes, i was crying of laughter…it happens.
