This winter will probably be the most memorable winter since 30 years ago. We are on track for setting new records. Those records are either going to be how many days it snows in DC or how much snow falls for the whole year.
After the Christmas storm, the cold air from Canada will come pouring in as the big Christmas storm triggers this cold air to come down from Canada and recharges our cold pattern in place. There is a set of 3 pacific storms entering the northern jet, each one seems to develop into a major snowstorm one after another. These storms dive into California, head east and re-organize. So we could be talking in feet after the first week of January is over. First in the series of snowstorms is slated for New Year’s weekend, after that will be on the 5th of January. I think school will be running until July this year what do you think? January and February this year will be like what we saw last weekend. We should get a break from this stormy and cold pattern in mid-January as the pattern gets ready to reload. The jet stream will move back north and relax. This will allow a period of warmth and drier weather for the middle of January only in the wake of another round of stormy and cold weather.
It does look like a decent snowstorm on New Year’s weekend with about 6 or more inches. However, I would not pay much attention to the total snowfall that may accrue. Rather, the storms track. We have already exceeded my projections for total snowfall this year of 20″. We are on track for 30″ this year.
