Modern Warfare 2 Review

This entry is part 2 of 5 in the series video games

The most anticipated game of the year, Modern Warfare 2, and let believe me it does deliver. Though the main focus of the game is multiplayer let me dive into the campaign. Modern warfare 2’ campaign involves a number of main characters that contribute to the story but the main conflict is a misunderstood war that should have never happened. The Russians have mistaken the Americans in assaulting a Russian airport and thus they retaliate by attacking Washington D.C. and there are a lot of pretty fireworks. There are enough Russians air dropped to take over the White House and to leave the Capital on fire.  While at the same time the Americans are tracking down an extremely dangerous terrorist, that in one of the missions you actually are disguised as a terrorist to get closer to this mad man. The game does offer a more variety of levels from places in Brazil to the dunes of Afghanistan. Some of the most exhilarated parts of the game are actually when you are not holding a gun. How does running for life from a bunch of crazy militia gunmen sound, while you are totally unarmed? Or how about ambushing enemies from the water and pulling them into the darkness of the ocean. I will not spoil the end of the game for anyone who hasn’t played it but I will tell you it is seriously badass.

There has been an update released for Modern warfare 2 that actually allows you to skip some levels due to disturbed actions and this is reasonable because not all people are strong hearted as others or some people might take offense to mowing down an entire crowd of innocent people. Though the campaign is more action packed than an action movie it is relatively short and only took me about 5 hours to complete and I usually take my time with games like this. Now this short campaign might be good for some, for those who don’t enjoy a long single player story mode but this might disappointed some serious fans of the series for being lacking in length of plot. I personally was craving more, yet I am quite content with the bit of taste of Modern Warfare I received.

New to the Modern Warfare is Spec Ops mode. This mode requires two players either someone over PSN and Xbox live or a buddy sitting next to you to work together to get through a selected level. These levels are comparable to levels in the campaign but require intense formation and you’ll need to cover your partner. At the end of every level you are awarded a score that is based on stars and time.

Now for what most have been waiting for “Multiplayer” now I can say that multiplayer has been greatly improved from Call of Duty: World at War which was broken in its own way. Things feel a bit more balanced and fair. The lay out is still the same, you choose a primary and secondary weapon, what equipment you’ll be using and perks yet they are more expanded this time. Things like Semtex grenades that stick onto surfaces sand explode or tactical insertions that allow you to choose your respawn are really helpful and stop those who just spam grenades. Not cool enough for you? Well how about dual wielding weapons? That’s right you can not run around spraying people with Uzi’s and your gangster fantasies’ will finally come true. The Riot shield is also a nice new addition to multiplayer that allows players to diving into bullets while the shield does all the work blocking bullets. The cool part is when you have your secondary weapon out the riot shield actually goes on your back it still helps deflects bullets. The Attachments like thermal scopes, heartbeat sensors, and more are greatly welcomed.

Perks work a bit different now a days though alone they are effective in battle and you will still have to unlock all this stuff by level perks can actually be upgraded themselves by completing challenges for them. For instance killing 300 people with the stopping power perk unlocks the Stopping power pro perk that increases more damage to your bullets on top of the already existing perk you have. Death Streaks are introduced and these give the player and advantage of others after dying a certain amount of times like increased health, the ability to copy your killer’s layout, or dropping a live grenade when you die. The greatest news for all you crazy killers out there, there are now customizable kill streaks. Scoring from UAV’s to attack helicopters, predator missiles, and tactical nukes. Not to mention I got nuked on my second game of multiplayer, yea I’m not good at the game myself but regardless anyone will find this fun.

The modes are still classic with capture the flag, Team deathmatch, and demolition but a new mode is 3rd person mode which views all of the battle in a different perspective. This gives this mode that Metal Gear Solid 4 feel, which might be good for some or others might not care at all.

From all of this I strongly getting this game if you are a hard core shooter fan, you will just be gorging yourself on action and Call of Duty has never looked so good especially with its replay ability and new improved game modes.

+ Great Multiplayer

+Co-op experience added

+ Balanced game play

- Too short of campaign

i love this game but you did forget to mention a GIGANTIC flaw in the story
the Russians SOMEHOW cross the Atlantic with both the U.S and other allied countries SOMEHOW didn’t see this
i mean they have enough troops (airdropped) to overtake the U.S and capture the white house and absolutely no one saw them coming
but the game is still awesome if you ignore this gigantic fact

Who cares!? It’s about story within the conflict, man! Not how it got to be that way.

even so you have to admit that the Campaign isnt the center focus of this game im pretty sure most people would agree with that but there are some parts of the campaign that feel like they are taken right out of an action movie. In my opinion it was almost like the action pieces were made then the story was made around it.

I thought the Modern Warfare 2 Campaign was one of the most exciting single player experiences I have ever had the pleasure of feeling. AWESOME.
