Yes we’re gay, yes we’re feminists, and yes we’re diverse!! As most of us know, today BCC held a silent protest against the Westboro Baptist Church. They came to our school to protest our open-mindedness, to express what they believed God wants, to provoke violence from us and to be on camera. BCC responded to their threats and beliefs with silence stronger than they could have seen coming. Our signs said it all. Many people believe that what we displayed today was strength in our community, and I have to say I agree. It wasn’t the numbers that mattered, but that we came together to defend our school, our home, our place of knowledge. Westboro may feel that they have affected us, have upset us, and have taught us what’s right, but in all honesty we taught them that not everyone believes the same things.

The protest began between 6:45 and 6:50. WBC stood in the grass area in front of our school fence on Eastwest Higway. The protesters included 2 adult women, who looked to be in their late 30′s or early 40′s, a teenage girl who looked to be about 16 or 17, and 2 young boys whose ages appear to be somewhere between 6 and 10. They placed the Gay flag along with the American flag on the ground at their feet. One of the WBC protesters wore the American flag upside down, in act to offend us. To everyone they chanted “God Hates America”. To us BCC protestsers they yelled phrases like ” you are a dummy” and “your parents hate you”. They held signs with the words including ”God Is Your Enemy” and “Soldiers Die God Laughs” on them.

Many BCC students and stafff arrived at school early. Police officers stood across the street to insure everyone’s safety. Students made signs with messages of love spread across them. One sign said “God Loves Everyone” and another said “I ♥ Diversity”. The crowd responded to the WBC protesters with silence. They saw our signs and yelled their hate, but we kept silent. At around7:25, those who wanted to stated the pledge of alligance. We felt our message was heard and left.
According to most, the WBC protesters left before BCC’s lunch time.

Overall, it was a wonderful protest and we are all proud of BCC’s strength and pride !
