“ I am so glad I picked IB/AP Literature”
The walk to school wasn’t long for Elena. The minutes seem to fly by as she gets lost in her thoughts. Arriving at school she didn’t stop to talk to anyone, just as no one stopped to talk to her. Her friends knew that Elena wasn’t much of a morning person, so stopping to talk about last night’s date would get you a stare which obviously said Are you f-ing with me? She walked through the noisy hallways of her school to her locker. She opened her locker to have a journal fall on her head. She picked up her journal and ran to class. Arriving in class Elena took her seat. She closed her eyes as she attempted to meditate her Monday blues out. When she opened her eyes she found a set of familiar brown eyes. She looked at her best friend of ten years. “What’s up Jules?” “Mhm…” Elena raised an eyebrow as she looked at her best friend. “Breakfast was awkward that’s all” Julia traced the desk’s edges with her fingers as Elena processed her friend’s answer. “Mind telling me what happened?” Julia sighed as she analyzed her morning. “I don’t really know, it just felt like a twilight zone”. Julia seemed quieter than usual. Elena let her mind drift as she counts the synchronized seconds of the clock. She only came back to attention when a packet slammed on her desk. She picked up the packet and saw it read MEET THE CHARACTERS. she looked up to meet her teacher’s eye and gave her a look that said Another project?!?. The teacher smiled back as if to say you’ll like this one. Elena Sighed as she started to read the front page of the packet.
MEET THE CHARACTERS
Throughout Literature some of the best Authors have been those who challenged our ideals and provoked our thoughts. They are the ones who have exposed us for who really were in the inside. They were the ones who made us find our inner heroes and villain by what they Didn’t say. And they were also the ones who has given us some very beloved characters whom has lived in our hearts and has grown along with us whether it be through culture, or Hollywood. You will be doing a project for the next few weeks titled “Meet the Characters”. You will be assigned with a partner whom you will get to know. A few weeks in to the project you will be expected to write a writing piece whether it be a poem, or short story about your partner. The grade for your piece will be based on the rubric printed at the back of this sheet……
Elena smiled when she read over the project. Words were always easy for her. She couldn’t draw or design well, but she could picture and describe. She smiled with great anticipation as to who she would be partnered with. The teacher stood up from her desk and started to explain “Hoping that some of you have read the packet I just handed out to you I will give a very brief explanation of the project as it is very descriptive in the packet. I will give each of you a partner whom you are responsible for getting to know…” Elena let her eyes wonder to the window. She looked out her window and looked at the trees which showed in amiable display of the season. The leaves seemed to play with the different colors red brown yellow and green. “I will start to call out your groups so please pay attention”. Elena wondered who she would be partnered with. She looked around the room at all the different faces. She saw sleepy ones, bored ones, irritated ones…. “Elena Smith is with Mr. Jonathan Babkowski.” .Elena looked over to Jonathan. His face was absolutely impassive. His Blue eyes Distant as he looked straight ahead. She sighed and looked back at the packet.
************
Julia Sighed as she hears her partner’s name “Domenico Jones”. She looks at the packet with a gut wrenching Nauseated feeling. She hated writing for the most part, and most of all she hated Domenico. A yell across the room interrupted her thoughts. She looked back to see a big 7-eleven slushy splattered across Domenico’s desk. A girl named Sarah continuously apologized for her clumsiness, He looked annoyed as he kept reassuring her all was fine. Ms Carlson the English teacher looked irritated as she said “Sarah why don’t you just get paper towels from the bathroom to clean it up?” As Sarah got out of the room Domenico got up from his desk and stood against the counter in front of the window. The sunlight coming in from the outside outlined a tall confident figure. Julia studied Domenico and stopped when she reached his face, a mocking smile Displayed on his face as she found herself staring. She tore her eyes away and looked to the front. Her eyes set on the clock soaked in every second as time seems to slow down. Julia felt nervous about the upcoming project as she hated Literature. She wasn’t much of a writer, and hated the idea of analyzing a book and its main characters. Now she was going to have to analyze a person and make that person into a fictional character. It’s also not a plus that she finds her character to be an egotistical douche bag with a walnut for a brain that seems to be overcompensating. She hasn’t had the best experiences with him, and the rumors about him didn’t help either. The sad part about it is that girls trailed after him like mindless alien zombies following their motherboard of a leader. She felt sickened by his easy stereotypical category. The class bell rang as students dashed out of their classrooms. Julia walked to Ms. Carlson’s desk. “Umm Ms. Carlson I was wondering if I could change partners by any chance?” “I’m afraid not Julia, I am aware that you are not necessarily fond of Mr. Jones- but I assigned you your partners for a specific reason” Julia walked away in response to her teacher’s dismissive tone. She walked out the door to find Elena Standing with an apologetic face. She joined her friend as she said “I am so glad I picked IB AP Literature” in her most sarcastically emphasized voice.
